Disk space: what counts and what happens when it is full

Updated - ago 1 views

Your plan's space is a single total shared by:

  • your website files (images, code, WordPress uploads…),
  • your mailboxes (all stored messages and attachments),
  • your databases.

For example, on the Basic plan (10 GB): if your websites use 3 GB, your email 5 GB and your databases 1 GB, you are using 9 GB and have 1 GB left.

A plan that includes many databases or mailboxes does not add extra space: that is the maximum number you can create, but they all share the same total space.

Where to see your usage

In your control panel, on the main screen and under Statistics, you can see the disk usage of websites, email and databases.

What happens when you reach the limit

  • You cannot save new files or receive new email until you free up space.
  • Writing to your databases is paused: your website stays visible, but you cannot publish posts, take orders or save changes. See Databases: limits and read-only mode.
  • We notify you in the panel and by email.

Everything returns to normal automatically once you free up space, usually within an hour.

How to free up space

  • Empty the trash and delete old emails with large attachments.
  • Remove backups you have stored inside your website (plugins such as UpdraftPlus keep them in wp-content).
  • Delete old revisions and logs from the database (WP-Optimize, for example).
  • Optimise images and remove old log files or caches.

If your project needs more space permanently, the best option is to upgrade your plan.
